It is quite simple, come to think of it, Zelda Williams lost her father, brilliant comedian and actor, Robin Williams to an apparent suicide. She took to Twitter and Instagram to mourn her beloved father only to be swept by messages of harassment and cyberbullying, she decided to quit Twitter.

Since then, Twitter released a very public statement from Del Harvey, Twitter’s vice president of trust and safety saying “We will not tolerate abuse of this nature on Twitter, We have suspended a number of accounts related to this issue for violating our rules and we are in the process of evaluating how we can further improve our policies to better handle tragic situations like this one. This includes expanding our policies regarding self-harm and private information, and improving support for family members of deceased users.”

Twitter and Instagram accounts of Robin William’s immediate family were bombarded for not posting enough pictures of the late Robin Williams as well as graphic photo-shopped images depicting Williams’ last moments.

On her Instagram account, Zelda Williams said “I will be leaving this account for a [sic] but while I heal and decide if I’ll be deleting it or not. In this difficult time, please try to be respectful of the accounts of myself, my family and my friends.” She added, “Mining our accounts for photos of dad, or judging me on the number of them is cruel and unnecessary.”

“I shared him with a world where everyone was taking their photo with him, but I was lucky enough to spend time with him without cameras too,” she continued. “That was more than enough, and I’m grateful for what little time I had. My favourite photos of family are framed in my house, not posted on social media, and they’ll remain there. They would’ve wound up on the news or blogs then, and they certainly would now. That’s not what I want for our memories together. Thank you for your respect and understanding in this difficult time. Goodbye. Xo.”

My only statement. My brothers’ are also online. Thank you for all your kindness and goodbye for awhile guys. xo http://t.co/ZOWEGNVsc5 — Zelda Williams (@zeldawilliams) August 13, 2014

An Ongoing Tragedy

Despite the tragic circumstances of losing one great actor to depression and suspected suicide, Zelda Williams’ ordeal finally pushed Twitter to work on “improving their policies” regarding cyberbullying, harassment and trolling.

It’s a shame it took this awful event for @twitter to react to all of the heinous things people say on here: http://t.co/nIh5pg37am

It all started with Zelda tweeting “Please report @PimpStory @MrGoosebuster. I’m shaking. I can’t. Please. Twitter requires a link and I won’t open it. Don’t either. Please.”  Zelda then deleted that previous tweet and published another one saying “I’m sorry. I should’ve risen above. Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye.”

Twitter has since suspended the accounts that Zelda asked her followers to report. And maybe taking further action against them. News is spreading about possible legal action against the owners of several Twitter accounts.

As an active member against the horrific incidents of Bullying and Cyberbullying, NoBullying feels the urge to remind everyone of what it feels like to lose a parent, let alone a loving parent and not forget the fact that Zelda Williams has to go through her grief in a very public arena, she surely has no need for harassment, cyberbullying and insensitive, unkind people trolling her every word. Our hearts and prayers are with the family of Robin Williams, Zelda Williams and every cyberbullying and bullying victim out there.
